I had no idea what a collect call was until today! I’d heard the term before, but had zero clue what it actually was, and if I had to use it this summer when I was abroad I would have been completely and totally out of my element. This is an interesting technology! It’s older, a relic of the old operator systems phones used to operate by. Today, they’re run by computers, but there is still a lot of waiting and red tape involved just for callers to get through to the companies they need to contact. It’s a smart way to avoid fees by allowing your credit card provider to take them on in order to help you, but if you’re just a number to your credit card company, they might not deem you as high of a priority in comparison to less expensive callers.
