Música de Brinquedo is the ninth studio album by the Brazilian indie rock band Pato Fu. It was released in 2010 by Rotomusic Records which is an independent label owned by the band.
Recording
Música de Brinquedo is Pato Fu’s first covers album and was recorded using miniature instruments and toy instruments such as plastic horns, xylophones, cavaquinhos, recorders, kazoo and glockenspiel. Such ‘toys’ were used to give the album a childlike sound. The guitarist and producer John Ulhoa explained the reason for the choice:
“In fact, we have a lot of material that could be just the starting point for a new album of originals (no, we are not in a creative crisis, before anyone asks…). But these toy arrangements would have a much more potent effect if applied to familiar songs.”
The daughter of Fernanda Takai and John Ulhoa, Nina Takai (band members), joined some tracks on the album singing with her mom.
Billboard Brasil magazine gave a positive review to the album, emphasizing that Pato Fu managed “for another ten years the title of the cutest band in Brazil” and Rolling Stone Brasil magazine gave 3 stars (out of a total of 5) classifying the work as ” daring and experimental” and highlighting that “technical perfection impresses”. The publication considered the album as the 5th best national album of 2010. The album also won a Latin Grammy for best children’s album.
Notes
This is one of my favorite cover albums. During my research to do the posts for this week and looking for music projects that fit my creativity in childhood this album came to my mind immediately. The technique is so impressive that it pleases not only children. Using toys to make music and other materials like pipes is a creative way to create new meanings for this materials in a way children still have fun and get stimulated by the songs.
