Design Conjecture – Interchangeable Backseat Office/Lounge

After examining some concepts presented by auto industry leaders for autonomous backseat designs, as well as noting some of the existing modifications and products on the market today for improvement of the back seat passenger experience, a link between using the back space to both work and relaxed came to the surface.

Depending on who is occupying the back seat and at what time, the types of activities conducted by passengers will vary. The back seat environment for children is drastically different for that of adults; However, if we are to examine the direction in which autonomous vehicle interiors are being designed, we can see that both users need comfort and versatility while in the back seat, and would ideally prefer to use it for a variety of purposes.

With this in mind, my conjecture for this topical is an interchangeable backseat workspace that can double as a play/relaxation space if desired. There were plenty of cheap accessories on the current market for “backseat desks,” as well as many individuals making their own offices from the backseat. The workspace in this conjecture has several features that can allow a user to focus on work while the car drives itself, such as pull out desks, charging ports, and an interface that could possibly allow them to sync their phone, email, video chats, and calendars to nearby touch screens in the back seat. Assuming adults aren’t the ones occupying the back seat, the back seats can be adjusted to appropriate heights and there is plenty of storage for toys, coloring books, snacks, and so on.

When passengers don’t need to use their back seat to get work done, they can switch to the play/relaxation space. The seats in this space are designed to recline, as well as provide the best ergonomic support for users both as they work and as they play. In addition to plenty of storage for entertainment, the backseat features a screen in which users can connect their devices, stream video, and connect gaming consoles via HDMI port. Additionally, the pull out desks can be utilized if so desired for tabletop gaming, snacks, etc.
