Dumped Milk, Smashed Eggs, Plowed Vegetables: Food Waste of the Pandemic

Summary

This article from the New York Times explains that many farms are creating an excess amount of food that cannot be distributed to people in need. Due to the fast decline of restaurant usage nation-wide, food demand is looking vastly different.

Farmers of Dairy, Poultry, and Veggies are producing more food than they are able to get rid of. Not only is all their storage filled, but distribution costs are preventing this food from reaching the hands of families that really need it. The image above shows an entire ditch of onions that will soon be buried because farmers literally can’t even give them away. More than 4 million gallons of milk is being dumped out daily because of this phenomenon.

Reflection

This article shows a fault in our current food system that has been exposed from the coronavirus. It is important that future changes are made to prevent this from happening during future tragedies
