This lighting fixture is designed to sit on the edge of the garage walls so that they are clear to sight both from the interior and exterior of the building. Through repetition and column-based shapes, I hope to create a protective barrier in a much more abstracted and much less oppressive way. Note that the fixture adopts a wavy form; its curve helps contrast with the raw, rigid, concrete-based parking garage environment. Also, the small repetitive lights are semi-directional, whereas the slim of light at the end serves as a wall light; both lights are fairly diffused. In this way, I attempt to soften the overall garage image, bringing in a warmer, mellower sense of feeling. The form of each little light derives from mushrooms, but in an abstracted way. I would like to bring in a sense of nature within the parking garage space since biophilia is critical to people’s physical and mental heath and well-being. I was thinking the lights could be installed on each floor of the parking garage using a different color; then from the exterior, a rainbow effect might be created.
