The article “The Role of Biomaterials and Biocompatible Materials in Implant-Supported Dental Prosthesis” explores how biomaterials enhance dental implants and their integration with bone.  Biomaterials are defined as “biological or synthetic materials that are utilized to rehabilitate a segment of living structure to sustain involvement with tissues that are living” (Eftekhar Ashtiani et al., 2021).  These materials are crucial for the success of dental implants, helping to “promote bone response and biomechanical ability,” and improving clinical outcomes (Eftekhar Ashtiani et al., 2021).

One significant advancement highlighted is the use of surface modifications like acid-etching and grit-blasting.  These techniques are used to “support osseointegration” by improving the implant’s connection with bone.  For instance, “microroughness” achieved through these methods plays a crucial role in “linking to nearby tissues and anchoring cells,” which enhances the healing process (Eftekhar Ashtiani et al., 2021).

The article notes that numerous materials are used in dental implants, including “calcium phosphate ceramics” and “bioactive glasses,” which are beneficial for their “osteoconductive” properties (Eftekhar Ashtiani et al., 2021).  These materials help form a “carbonate hydroxyapatite layer” that mimics the mineral phase in bone, aiding in better integration and stability of the implant (Eftekhar Ashtiani et al., 2021).

Despite these advancements, there are still challenges.  The article points out that “peri-implantitis,” or inflammation around the implant, is a significant issue.  While some materials have antibacterial properties, they do not completely prevent infections, indicating a need for further research.  The text suggests that “further research is needed to achieve the ideal dental implant,” emphasizing ongoing efforts to refine these materials for better long-term success (Eftekhar Ashtiani et al., 2021).
