This video comedically highlights the stressors that come with using a public ATM. While it might focus more on the race factor when it comes to profiling potential threats, it does make a good point about ATM safety. They might be secure machines, but depending on where they’re located, there are often real security risks for users once they have the physical cash in their hands. To put this into a travel context, I wonder how comfortable people are using ATMs while abroad. The best, most secure ones (like the ones in an airport) will likely have outrageous fees and exchange rates. This leaves the ones with the best rates far off the beaten path, where there are less cameras and bystanders that might be able to step in should something go wrong. This is something to keep in mind when considering how travelers might obtain physical foreign currency.
