{"id":8993,"date":"2021-09-30T14:45:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-30T18:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=8993"},"modified":"2021-10-05T14:47:39","modified_gmt":"2021-10-05T18:47:39","slug":"alcohol-companies-pitching-in-during-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2021\/09\/30\/alcohol-companies-pitching-in-during-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Alcohol Companies Pitching in During Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Alcohol companies and chemicals giant produce hand sanitiser<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With the coronavirus spreading particularly easily through people touching surfaces, hand sanitiser is crucial to stopping it in its tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also required to protect healthcare workers when caring for infected patients but the huge demand has created a global shortage \u2013 meaning a wave of companies have entered a market traditionally dominated by the likes of Dettol in the UK and Purell in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsenergybusiness.com\/news\/ineos-saudi-arabia-petrochemical-complex\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Petrochemicals giant Ineos<\/a>, Britain\u2019s biggest company by sales, has stepped in by drawing up plans to open a new plant just outside Middlesbrough, in north-east England, which will be capable of producing a million bottles of hand sanitiser per month. This will be replicated with another factory in Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_77411\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nsmedicaldevices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/03\/Ineos-hand-sanitiser-2.jpg\" alt=\"Ineos hand sanitiser, companies ventilators shortage\" class=\"wp-image-77411\" \/><figcaption>Ineos plans to create one million bottles of hand sanitiser per month at a new plant (Credit: Ineos)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The company, which hopes to have the UK plant open by the first week of April, will make both large push-dispenser bottles that will be supplied to NHS hospitals for free and small pocket-sized bottles for sale through supermarkets and pharmacies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has also increased production of ethanol and isopropyl alcohol \u2013 which will be used in hand sanitiser \u2013 at existing plants in Scotland and Germany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ineos,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsenergybusiness.com\/news\/ineos-and-upm-biofuels-announce-supply-agreement-for-renewable-raw-materials\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">which has operations ranging from oil and gas to plastics<\/a>, already produces rubber gloves, PVC saline drips, syringes, ventilators and medical tubing for the healthcare industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Announcing the plans, founder and chairman Sir Jim Ratcliffe said: \u201cIneos is a company with enormous resources and manufacturing skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf we can find other ways to help in the Coronavirus battle, we are absolutely committed to playing our part.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given that the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention says sanitisers need to contain between 60% and 95% alcohol to be effective at killing microbes, breweries and distilleries are also playing a key role in retooling production for the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are following the World Health Organisation\u2019s approved recipe of denatured raw alcohol, glycerine and hydrogen peroxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ns-businesshub.com\/business\/the-rise-of-brewdog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Scottish craft beer brand BrewDog<\/a>&nbsp;diversified its operations in March by unveiling Brewgel Punk Sanitiser, which will be given away for free to charities and an Aberdeen hospital rather than sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Trump has praised the role of Pernod Ricard SA, the French spirits empire behind brands like Absolut vodka and Jameson Irish whiskey, which has begun making about 5,700 gallons of hand sanitiser each week at distilleries in the US.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"attachment_77410\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nsmedicaldevices.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/03\/Brewdog-hand-sanitiser.jpg\" alt=\"companies ventilators shortage, brewdog hand sanitiser, brewgel\" class=\"wp-image-77410\" \/><figcaption>BrewDog has unveiled Punk Sanitiser to help meet the UK hand sanitiser shortage (Credit: BrewDog)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>North America vice-president Melissa Hanesworth, who came up with the idea for her company, told&nbsp;<em>MarketWatch<\/em>: \u201cThe trick to making hand sanitiser is that you have to denature it so people don\u2019t consume it, which is the opposite of what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Budweiser maker Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, rum giant Bacardi and numerous independent companies have also contributed to the hand sanitiser effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three factories owned by luxury goods group LVMH that usually produce Christian Dior, Givenchy and Guerlain perfumes have also been switched to make hand sanitiser for French hospitals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alcohol companies and chemicals giant produce hand sanitiser With the coronavirus spreading particularly easily through people touching surfaces, hand sanitiser is crucial to stopping it in its tracks.
