Which it is. But unless you\u2019re part of a rather\u2026unique\u2026subset of humanity, you likely have no idea that Disneyland\u2019s main customer base is actually\u00a0<em>local<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 SoCal residents who hold Annual Passes and come several times a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, although this sounds insane, there are forums full of hardcore Disneyphiles who visit the park several times a&nbsp;<em>week<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 sometimes popping in just to sit on a bench in Main Street and watch people go by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s loyalty so impressive it may actually deserve another name altogether\u2026especially since there are plenty of other things to do in California. How does Disney do it? And how can we apply these lessons to our own businesses?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are four major strategies worth thinking about:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. All theming, all the time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you take away the theming, there\u2019s nothing particularly special about Disneyland\u2019s rides. Tame roller coasters, generic log flumes, perfectly ordinary carousels\u2014off-the-shelf mid-range rides you could go on at any theme park. In fact, several nearby parks have far more extreme and exciting rides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The thing is, Disney\u2019s theming isn\u2019t just slapping a few cartoon animals on the sides of rides. It\u2019s immersive, complete and, in its own cheesier-than-France way, kind of classy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes sure its Fantasyland cast members don\u2019t wander through Frontierland dressed in costumes with the wrong theming. It pumps out scents for each ride\u2014brine for Pirates of the Caribbean, honey for Winnie-the-Pooh, and a cold, musty smell for the Haunted Mansion. The carparks aren\u2019t called A, B and C\u2014instead there\u2019s Pumba Parking, the Mickey and Friends Parking Structure, and Toy Story Parking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly, the \u201cbusiness\u201d areas of Disneyland like loading zones or cleaning cupboards are cleverly hidden in \u201coffstage\u201d areas. Cast members are strictly forbidden to \u201cremove their heads\u201d in view of any guests (children&nbsp;<em>or&nbsp;<\/em>adults). And of course, two Mickeys are never allowed to be in view at once, because there\u2019s only one Mickey Mouse\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even tiny details like the autographs characters give out are exactingly themed. Actors must learn to replicate the signature of their character; a Belle signature in Disneyland should look identical to a Belle signature in Disneyworld Tokyo six years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The immersive element is pervasive. Even the doorknobs and cutlery contain the iconic Mickey-head shape\u2014just in case you forget you\u2019re in Disneyland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to apply this to your business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a \u201cvoice\u201d, make sure it\u2019s present throughout your entire business. Your persona should be reflected in your choice of typography, your about page, your on-hold music, even your 404 errors. When a customer visits your site, he should always be aware he is on&nbsp;<em>your<\/em>&nbsp;site. If you\u2019re using a humorous, wisecracking tone through most of your website, don\u2019t switch to bland corporate-speak in your terms and conditions or contact form. People tend to buy who you are, not what you do\u2014so give them as many chances as possible to get to know who you are. Everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Immersion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a similar vein, a lot of Disney\u2019s most loyal customers don\u2019t show up for the rides themselves. Not for the mechanics, anyway. Increased G-forces and mild nausea don\u2019t inspire that kind of fanaticism\u2014and as I\u2019ve said, there are more extreme places just around the corner anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather, fans keep coming back because there\u2019s always more to see. Disney\u2019s motto isn\u2019t \u201cLots of Rides\u201d\u2014it\u2019s \u201cThe Happiest Place on Earth\u201d. And Disney maintains constant interest by making sure there\u2019s always something else to notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Interesting, interactive queueing areas for the rides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sporadic \u201cspontaneous\u201d performances by Mary Poppins or Alice and the Mad Hatter at various times of day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rides like the Jungle Cruise that are strikingly different at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Holiday theming. Different fireworks displays. \u201cLimited-time only\u201d eatables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to apply this to your business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want people coming back\u2014and you definitely do, because that\u2019s where you make most of your money\u2014then you need to provide more than just a bare-bones service. Disneyland is more than a place to be strapped into a chair and flung around; and your business should be more than the mechanics of what you do. If you specialize in birthday cakes, don\u2019t just gear your website to selling birthday cakes\u2014gear it to making birthday-cake selection the most fun, engaging, stress-free experience your customer has ever had. Develop an autoresponder sequence that immerses your customers in the story of how their cakes are made, and why you put so much love into them. Find ways to be far more than just a birthday-cake maker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Everyone\u2019s a princess<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of Disney films are about being a special and unique snowflake. And astonishingly, despite the positively&nbsp;<em>enormous<\/em>&nbsp;numbers of people churning through the gates each day, Disney staff actually do treat their guests like snowflakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cast members give children badges and balloons at random; princesses stop to greet little girls dressed in princess gear; guests are allowed to \u201ccaptain\u201d the Jungle Cruise or Mark Twain Riverboat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Disney is famous for being especially considerate to guests with disabilities, ranging from claustrophobia to autism\u2014and it\u2019s scrupulous about accommodating food allergies. The perpetually bubbly staff do their best to make sure every guest feels special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Artificial, contrived and cynical? Possibly\u2014but people keep coming back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to apply this in your business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Seriously, do I need to explain this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Customer service of any positive kind is a surprisingly rare phenomenon in today\u2019s world. Just try ringing your internet service provider or getting someone on the phone to fix your printer if you don\u2019t believe me. But as pleasing and unexpected as&nbsp;<em>good<\/em>&nbsp;customer service is,&nbsp;<em>great<\/em>&nbsp;customer service will truly cement customer loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Mining the mythos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, Disneyland hides its \u201cseams\u201d. Trees that need cutting down are switched during the night with fully-grown replacements from Disney\u2019s nursery. Cleaners are inconspicuous. Staff areas are hidden underground or painted \u201cno-see-um\u201d green and shrouded in foliage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Disneyland is also very blatant about acknowledging itself and its creator\u2014in a sense, Disneyland\u2019s greatest product is its own mythology. The running of the park may be too vulgar for the public eye, but the story of the park is trumpeted everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, all Disney parks draw on the enormous popularity of the movies and music. But Disneyland has more than that. It\u2019s the original, the \u201chistorical\u201d Disney\u2014the only park planned and lived in by Walt himself. And it blatantly rides on that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hordes of guests are guided through Walt Disney\u2019s hidden Main Street apartment (in which a light is always kept symbolically burning). The names of the Imagineers are featured on the shop windows of Main Street. The Lily Belle, a train-car designed for Walt\u2019s wife, is a major photo-op attraction; as is the sentimental \u201cPartners\u201d statue of Walt and Mickey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Disney never lets anyone forget its past successes. Its parades are a constant triumph of its classics\u2014in fact, it has reached the point where it can simply&nbsp;<em>manufacture<\/em>&nbsp;classics, labeling them as such before they\u2019ve even come out on DVD. When Tiana and Rapunzel were inaugurated into Disney\u2019s official princess lineup, the marketing made it a quasi-historical occasion\u2014and thousands upon thousands of loyal customers showed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It works so well that a few years back people were shelling out $150 to have their names immortalised on a brick paver laid in the \u201cWalk of Magical Memories\u201d between Disneyland and DCA (for a minimum of one year, liable to be torn up at any time, brick remaining the property of Disney!) Why would anyone feel the need to buy pavers for a multimillion-dollar company\u2026unless to felt they were part of something grand, historical and exciting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to apply this in your own business<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chances are you don\u2019t have a shareholder\u2019s stake in childhood the way Disney does. But you can still draw on the mythos of your own life or company\u2014or failing that, life in general\u2014to appeal to customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, anyone selling candles can paint a word picture of humans flirting, grieving, dining and sewing by candlelight over millennia of human history. Or you can create interesting personas that people want to identify with (witness the recent success of the All Spice Man and the Most Interesting Man in the World). There is a struggle to maintain customers, because upon every return to the experience, it becomes duller and duller for customers. This is something Disney parks don&#8217;t deal with and their primary customer base is actually returning customers. Two key takeaways from this article I think are how Disney is always theming. Everything you touch is Disney. From napkins to doorknobs, Mickey Mouse can be found everywhere. Disney themed music is blaring all the time. There is complete immersion into the brand and this is something that gives customers a sense of belonging and pride to something bigger than themselves. The second takeaway is that Disney treats everyone as if they are special. We all want the recognition of other people and Disney gives it to us. Whether it is giving a random child a balloon, handing out stickers, or including customers into the attractions in a pivotal role. Not to mention their customer service is unrivaled.
