{"id":7911,"date":"2021-09-09T13:47:27","date_gmt":"2021-09-09T17:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=7911"},"modified":"2021-09-09T14:11:13","modified_gmt":"2021-09-09T18:11:13","slug":"these-artists-have-found-creative-ways-to-offer-hope-amid-the-covid-19-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2021\/09\/09\/these-artists-have-found-creative-ways-to-offer-hope-amid-the-covid-19-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"These artists have found creative ways to offer hope amid the COVID-19 crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Artists around the world are adapting to shutdowns by swapping physical performance spaces for virtual ones.<\/li><li>Social distancing comes at a great price for both artists and audiences.<\/li><li>Artists are finding creative ways to keep people connected during a pandemic that keeps us apart.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A robotic arm playing a cello was one of many highlights at Olafur Eliasson&#8217;s Symbiotic Seeing exhibition in Zurich, Switzerland, before it&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eliasson.kunsthaus.ch\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closed prematurely<\/a>&nbsp;due to COVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can now watch a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eyzjhkwpKp8&amp;feature=emb_logo\" target=\"_blank\">video of the exhibition<\/a>, as well as a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=2755386337890355\" target=\"_blank\">clip of the robot cellist in action<\/a>&nbsp;playing eerie music by award-winning Icelandic composer Hildur Gudnadottir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With audiences isolating at home, venues shuttered, events cancelled \u2013 including&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.glastonburyfestivals.co.uk\/a-statement-from-glastonbury-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glastonbury<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-edinburgh-east-fife-52121586\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Edinburgh\u2019s August festivals<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 and freelancers\u2019 paychecks melting away, the arts industry, which operates almost exclusively from public spaces, is scrambling to reinvent itself online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many artists have responded to this challenge with the kind of ingenuity you&#8217;d expect from highly creative minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The arts world, from your couch<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>American children&#8217;s book illustrator and artist Carson Ellis started a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/carsonellis\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;quarantine art club<\/a>&nbsp;on Instagram with daily assignments for people stuck at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Musicians from the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra embraced technology to record a virtual rendition of Beethoven&#8217;s Ode to Joy from their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re adjusting to a new reality and we\u2019ll have to find solutions in order to support each other,\u201d the musicians said in their video, which&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3eXT60rbBVk&amp;feature=share&amp;app=desktop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">had over 2 million views in less than two weeks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCreative forces help us, let\u2019s think outside of the box and use innovation to keep our connection and make it work, together. Because if we do it together, we\u2019ll succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other musicians and singers have live-streamed concerts from home, with online audiences quick to show their appreciation with a deluge of likes, shares and comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>US entertainment site Billboard&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/columns\/pop\/9335531\/coronavirus-quarantine-music-events-online-streams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">compiled a list of artists and bands<\/a>&nbsp;who are live-streaming shows \u201cto share some musical joy during these trying times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other tools to get your culture fix without leaving home have been around since before the lockdowns. For example, many museums will allow you to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/travel\/2020\/mar\/23\/10-of-the-worlds-best-virtual-museum-and-art-gallery-tours\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;visit their collections virtually<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The arts help people to cope in dark times \u2013 even during a pandemic that prevents us experiencing art and culture alongside others in the same physical spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eliasson recently shared an illustration he dedicated to Italian friends and family and the wider community.
