{"id":6437,"date":"2021-01-18T21:01:27","date_gmt":"2021-01-19T02:01:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=6437"},"modified":"2021-01-20T17:25:12","modified_gmt":"2021-01-20T22:25:12","slug":"a-digital-canyon-1-3-billion-school-aged-children-cant-log-on-to-the-internet-at-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2021\/01\/18\/a-digital-canyon-1-3-billion-school-aged-children-cant-log-on-to-the-internet-at-home\/","title":{"rendered":"A \u2018digital canyon\u2019: 1.3 billion school-aged children can\u2019t log on to the internet at home"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>UN News<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Date: 1 December 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">UNICEF<\/a>&#8211;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.itu.int\/en\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">ITU<\/a>&nbsp;report&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/resources\/children-and-young-people-internet-access-at-home-during-covid19\" target=\"_blank\">How Many Children and Youth Have Internet Access at Home?<\/a>&nbsp;also found a similar lack of access for young people aged 15-24, with 759 million or 63 per cent unconnected at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The massive number \u201cis more than a digital gap \u2013 it is a digital canyon\u201d,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/two-thirds-worlds-school-age-children-have-no-internet-access-home-new-unicef-itu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Henrietta Fore, UN Children\u2019s Fund (UNICEF) Executive Director.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lack of connectivity, she continued, doesn\u2019t just limit children and young people\u2019s ability to connect online, it isolates them from the work and prevents them from competing in the modern economy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd in the event of school closures, such as those currently experienced by millions due to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">COVID-19<\/a>, it causes them to lose out on education. Put bluntly: Lack of internet access is costing the next generation their futures,\u201d Ms. Fore added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Education out of reach\u2019&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to UNICEF, a quarter of a billion students worldwide are still affected by COVID-19-related school closures, forcing hundreds of millions of students to rely on virtual learning. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those with no internet access, education can be out of reach. Even before the pandemic, a growing cohort of young people needed to learn foundational, transferable, digital, job-specific and entrepreneurial skills to compete in the 21st century economy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018A formidable challenge\u2019&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Houlin Zhao, International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Secretary-General,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unicef.org\/press-releases\/two-thirds-worlds-school-age-children-have-no-internet-access-home-new-unicef-itu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">outlined<\/a>&nbsp;that connecting rural populations remains a formidable challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/global.unitednations.entermediadb.net\/assets\/mediadb\/services\/module\/asset\/downloads\/preset\/Libraries\/Graphics+Library\/01-12-2020-UNICEF-report-Graph.jpg\/image560x340cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Number of children and young people with and without internet access at home (in millions), by region.\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: UNICEF-ITU report<\/strong>&nbsp;|&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/data.unicef.org\/resources\/children-and-young-people-internet-access-at-home-during-covid19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click here<\/a>&nbsp;to see the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLarge parts of rural areas are not covered with a mobile-broadband network, and fewer rural households have access to the internet. The gap in mobile broadband adoption and internet use between developed and developing countries is especially wide,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perpetuating inequalities&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The report also revealed that the digital divide is perpetuating inequalities between countries and communities. According to the report, globally, 58 per cent school-age children from richest households have internet connection at home, compared with only 16 per cent from the poorest households.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation is similar between urban and rural populations and between high-income and low-income countries: around 60 per cent of school-aged children in urban areas do not have internet access at home, compared with around 75 per cent in rural households. School-aged children in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are the most affected, with around 9 in 10 children not connected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source:https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2020\/12\/1078872<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Comment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What made me pick out this article was the fact that it highlighted the disparaging differences that children are facing due to COVID.
