{"id":5760,"date":"2020-09-22T11:29:01","date_gmt":"2020-09-22T15:29:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=5760"},"modified":"2020-09-22T11:34:13","modified_gmt":"2020-09-22T15:34:13","slug":"dune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2020\/09\/22\/dune\/","title":{"rendered":"Dune"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Set in the distant future amidst a feudal interstellar society in which various noble houses control planetary\u00a0fiefs,\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>\u00a0tells the story of young\u00a0Paul Atreides, whose family accepts the stewardship of the planet\u00a0Arrakis. While the planet is an inhospitable and sparsely populated desert wasteland, it is the only source of\u00a0melange, or &#8220;the spice,&#8221; a drug that extends life and enhances mental abilities. Melange is also necessary for space navigation, which requires a kind of multidimensional awareness and foresight that only the drug provides.<sup> <\/sup>As melange can only be produced on Arrakis, control of the planet is thus a coveted and dangerous undertaking. The story explores the multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the factions of the empire confront each other in a struggle for the control of Arrakis and its spice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Dune<\/em>\u00a0has been called the &#8220;first planetary ecology novel on a grand scale&#8221;.<sup> <\/sup>After the publication of\u00a0<em>Silent Spring<\/em>\u00a0by\u00a0Rachel Carson\u00a0in 1962, science fiction writers began treating the subject of ecological change and its consequences.\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>\u00a0responded in 1965 with its complex descriptions of Arrakis life, from giant sandworms (for whom water is deadly) to smaller, mouse-like life forms adapted to live with limited water.\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>\u00a0was followed in its creation of complex and unique ecologies by other science fiction books such as\u00a0<em>A Door into Ocean<\/em>\u00a0(1986) and\u00a0<em>Red Mars<\/em>\u00a0(1992).\u00a0Environmentalists have pointed out that\u00a0<em>Dune<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0popularity as a novel depicting a planet as a complex\u2014almost living\u2014thing, in combination with the first images of Earth from space being published in the same time period, strongly influenced environmental movements such as the establishment of the international\u00a0Earth Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>In <em>Dune<\/em>, Prince Paul Atreides is cast into the desert where he encounters the native peoples of the planet living in exile in a land only they know how to live in. I am inspired by the story&#8217;s praise of native ways of doing, surviving, and making.
