Maybe you should photograph someone who\u2019s younger.\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>JILL BLACKMORE EVANS 19 SEPTEMBER 2018<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a project called&nbsp;<em>1000 Strangers,<\/em>&nbsp;photographer&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/laurazalenga.com\/\">Laura Zalenga<\/a>&nbsp;approached random people on the street and asked to take their photograph. It was a fun exercise in portraiture, but Zalenga began to notice something that surprised and saddened her: older people tended to say no to being photographed. Frequently they would demur, saying, \u201cI\u2019m not beautiful anymore. Maybe you should photograph someone who\u2019s younger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zalenga was struck by these encounters, and decided she wanted to explore the idea of aging more closely in a documentary-style series. Dramatic self-portraiture is the German photographer\u2019s usual specialty; her work tends to feature stunning natural backdrops and carefully posed subjects. Photographing elderly people in their homes would be a huge departure, but the more she thought about it, the more important the project seemed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She had been thinking about applying to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.adobe.com\/about-adobe\/creative-residency.html\">Adobe\u2019s Creative Residency<\/a>, which offers photographers a year of funding and mentorship support to complete a personal project. Zalenga had applied the year prior, but hadn\u2019t been accepted, and was hesitant to pitch a photo series on old age to Adobe. \u201cThey\u2019re probably not going to pick this because it\u2019s about old people,\u201d she said. I had people where I told them that I thought they looked great, and they had tears in their eyes because it was so long since someone had told them they\u2019re beautiful. That really made me think\u2014something\u2019s so wrong with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also noticed that I don\u2019t talk to a lot of old people. I see my grandpa every now and then, but as he\u2019s not living in my hometown it\u2019s not very often. I realized that you can gain so much from these old people. I talked to other young people and they were like, \u201cYeah, I talk to my grandma when I say, \u2018Thanks for the Christmas money,\u2019 and that\u2019s basically it.\u201d To me it felt weird throwing away this big gift that is here in the form of the knowledge and the wisdom of old people and their stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Zalenga project illustrates the wisdom that elderly have to give. On her website, she includes poignant quotes from her talks with each subject. She also speaks to the difficulties of photographing seniors, saying how she had to take their photo exactly where they were sitting, because for some of them it was difficult or painful to reorient themselves.
