From time-to-time, she will link her handheld gaming system with her grandson\u2019s so the two can play together from across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t have too much of a social life. I\u2019m mostly stuck at home, and I don\u2019t know,\u201d Buchanan told NBC News. \u201cIt feels like company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a 2016&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/content\/dam\/aarp\/research\/surveys_statistics\/life-leisure\/video-games-attitudes-habits.doi.10.26419%252Fres.00125.001.pdf\">study<\/a>&nbsp;by the American Association of Retired Persons and the Entertainment Software Association, 38 percent of Americans age 50 and older said they play video games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/aaic\/releases_2019\/AAIC19-Wed-release-NewResearch.asp\">Research has shown<\/a>&nbsp;that some forms of cognitive stimulation may delay or slow the onset of degenerative neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer\u2019s or other forms of dementia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With their complex controls and fast pace, video games can provide a mental workout for seniors, experts say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"87-Year-Old Grandma Shows Her 3500+ Hour Animal Crossing Town\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Uwimf72h5qA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But cognitive stimulation is far from the only benefit seniors can reap from video games. Several gamers over 50 told NBC News that video games offered the social benefit of interacting with other players and even the chance to build followings on platforms like YouTube and Twitch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are a range of ways video games can positively impact older adults,\u201d Bryant said. \u201cOne is staying socially connected and active, and that\u2019s something we\u2019ve seen continue to grow over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This article introduced me to senior gaming and the benefits from it. The words of Audrey Buchanan speak for themselves, she finds joy and purpose from her Animal Crossings game. In addition, it serves as a vessel for her and her family to bond.
