Already this year we\u2019ve had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.factmag.com\/2018\/01\/17\/arturia-rackbrute-eurorack-cases-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a modular case from Arturia<\/a>, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.factmag.com\/2018\/01\/18\/korg-volca-mix-mixer-announced\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tiny mixer from Korg<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.factmag.com\/2018\/01\/11\/moog-drummer-another-mother\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moog\u2019s awesome new drum synth<\/a>.&nbsp;Are any of them as exciting than this cardboard piano Nintendo is releasing? No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Described by the Japanese video game innovators as a range of \u201cinteractive build-and-play experiences\u201d&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/labo.nintendo.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nintendo Labo<\/a>&nbsp;is the first major add-on to the Switch console, whose modular design allows it to be played on the TV or used as a handheld. You couldn\u2019t even really call Labo a video game \u2013 it\u2019s more a set of flat-pack cardboard toys that use the Switch\u2019s components to power them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>. . . the most impressive of all the Toy-Cons is the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/labo.nintendo.com\/kits\/variety-kit\/\" target=\"_blank\">miniature cardboard piano<\/a>. You have to construct the whole thing by folding up cardboard pieces, including the keys. Then you slot the Joy-Cons in the side, and the screen generates the sound when you press the keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/1\/17\/16900496\/nintendo-switch-labo-cardboard-diy-accessories-announced-price-release-date\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Verge<\/em><\/a>, the Joy-Con\u2019s infra-red camera can see the keys and detect which ones are being pressed. This information is relayed back to the Switch screen, which mirrors the keys being played. It even comes with separate knobs that can modify the sound, which we hope means that it\u2019ll function more like a synth than a piano.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Switch has upended what people expect from a video games console, and now it looks as if Labo is going to be instrumental in getting kids (and grown-ups) into making music as well. So,\u00a0while we\u2019re eager to get our hands on Moog\u2019s DFAM, Korg\u2019s Prologue and whatever else gets announced ahead of NAMM this month, Nintendo\u2019s cardboard piano has the potential to be bigger than all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"has-inline-color has-luminous-vivid-amber-color\">ANALYSIS<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NAMM is a conference held every year for tech companies to display new concepts and means of musical expression.&nbsp; To even compare a toy from a gaming company to the sophistication and reputation of companies like Moog means something.&nbsp; It is evident that Nintendo\u2019s Labo product offers an experience so new and refreshing that is captivating to the musical world, that even amidst the flurry of polished and intricate musical equipment musicians want to experience what it offers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something that specifically intrigues me about the switch is how it uses the Joy-Con\u2019s IR cameras to read which key is being pressed.\u00a0 It shows how sophisticated our technology is becoming and at what scale it can be implemented; into a children\u2019s video game controller.\u00a0 The function of this that I am most interested in however, is its capability to read a cardboard cutout and generate a sine wave based on the grooves of the cardboard cut. \u00a0This is something that opens the floor for musical discovery and education that has never been articulated by even the most robust music equipment at NAMM.\u00a0 Nintendo does this while providing a means of reusing cardboard, which presents sustainable opportunities as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/2n6jDBSeso0\">Here is a link to a demonstration of this function.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s January, which means gear announcements every day up to the annual NAMM show, when all the new synths and instruments get shown off to the public.
