{"id":3794,"date":"2020-09-03T15:02:15","date_gmt":"2020-09-03T15:02:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=3794"},"modified":"2020-09-03T16:18:51","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T16:18:51","slug":"planning-and-pandemics-covid-19-illuminates-why-urban-planners-should-have-listened-to-food-advocates-all-along","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2020\/09\/03\/planning-and-pandemics-covid-19-illuminates-why-urban-planners-should-have-listened-to-food-advocates-all-along\/","title":{"rendered":"Planning and pandemics COVID 19 illuminates why urban planners should have listened to food advocates all along."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10460-020-10090-0\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs10460-020-10090-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">This article<\/a>, written by Samina Raja,&nbsp;makes claims that the most important action right now is that of&nbsp;the 40,000&nbsp;LRM governments in the US&nbsp;(local, regional, metropolitan).&nbsp;They have the power to make more personal and empowering impacts for people in need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of 2014, when&nbsp;asked in a survey, only 1% of&nbsp;these officials viewed food systems&nbsp;as a primary area of public concern. \u201cYet, in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic food related work has suddenly been redefined as \u2018essential,\u2019&nbsp;as if there was any time when people did not&nbsp;eat,\u201d writes Samina.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, these governments \u2014 as well as local organization \u2014 are taking action now.&nbsp;The article references a fantastic source from Growing Food Connection (GFC) which have a&nbsp;growing database of the action that these LMR governments are taking to address food-insecurity in their area.&nbsp;Although a lot will change, it is especially important that this&nbsp;work helps the immediate problems as well as potential problems in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Reflection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For my project, I can use the <a href=\"http:\/\/growingfoodconnections.org\/tools-resources\/policy-database\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"http:\/\/growingfoodconnections.org\/tools-resources\/policy-database\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GFC database<\/a> as inspiration for how to help in my particular area.
