The&nbsp;video footage,\nwidely spread over social media and intermingled with statements condemning the\n\u2018idolatrous\u2019 objects, showed fighters methodically destroying nearly 3,000-year-old\nartefacts from the Assyrian empire and the ancient city of Hatra with\nsledgehammers, drills and stone-cutting saws. These included one of the finest\nAssyrian winged&nbsp;lamassu, which flanked the Nergal Gate in Nineveh, and a\nrenowned Hatrene royal sculpture of King Uthal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid the global condemnation that followed, Iranian-American\nartist Morehshin Allahyari started work on her project \u2018Material Speculation:\nISIS\u2019 (2015\u201316). Building on her existing interest in archiving and 3D printing\nas tools for \u2018both resistance and documentation\u2019, she began compiling visual\ndata with the aim of reconstructing some of the artefacts that had been\ndestroyed. After communicating extensively with former Mosul Museum staff who\nhad managed to escape ISIS\u2019s occupation of the city, the artist\nfocused&nbsp;her attention on 12 artefacts from the museum\u2019s former collection\nthat had succumbed to the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Analysis: This article outlines the amazing uses of 3d printing.
