{"id":1895,"date":"2019-09-19T17:57:52","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T17:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=1895"},"modified":"2019-09-23T14:35:58","modified_gmt":"2019-09-23T14:35:58","slug":"the-app-thats-kickstarting-a-food-sharing-revolution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2019\/09\/19\/the-app-thats-kickstarting-a-food-sharing-revolution\/","title":{"rendered":"The app that\u2019s kickstarting a food-sharing revolution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> by Paden Vaughan, <em>Huck<\/em>, April 25, 2017<br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huckmag.com\/art-and-culture\/olio-app-food-free-socially-conscious-waste-sharing\/\">The app that\u2019s kickstarting a food-sharing revolution<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up as part of a large family in Iowa, she developed an affinity for saving items that others discarded: spending days salvaging tin cans, wood from foreclosed houses and just about anything else sellable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea that one person\u2019s trash could be another\u2019s treasure resonated, and she dreamed of starting a business centred on sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nAfter realising that over a third of all food produced globally goes to waste \u2013 while almost one billion people go hungry \u2013 the pair teamed up to kickstart a food-sharing revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their solution is OLIO: an app that allows users to redistribute unwanted food instead of sending it to a landfill. To put it another way, it\u2019s like Tinder for leftovers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cWe cannot continue to waste food at the rate we do,\u201d she says emphatically. \u201cThe impact of climate change, coupled with the effects of food waste, forecasts mass civil unrest. I don\u2019t think people are going to start eating every single thing they buy, so sharing is, by default, the only answer.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Analysis: <\/em><\/strong><em>This company is taking part in the food waste revolution. Even if someone is conservative with what they buy, it&#8217;s likely that there will be some excess.
