At the time, Neuralink demonstrated a product in a video that reportedly showed two monkeys moving computer cursors with their brains, a feat that had been shown to be possible in humans more than 15 years earlier.

While Mr. Musk is often optimistic with predictions for his companies, some of which have yet to pan out, Neuralink received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to begin human trials last May.

The company’s website currently says that its “first clinical trial is open to recruitment” for people with limited or no use of both hands due to a cervical spinal cord injury or to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a neurological disorder that affects nerve cells.

“This study involves placing a small, cosmetically invisible implant in a part of the brain that plans movements,” Neuralink’s website reads. “The device is designed to interpret a person’s neural activity, so they can operate a computer or smartphone by simply intending to move — no wires or physical movement are required” (Mac, 2024).

It’s possible! The technology is out there and advancing. Musk’s brain implant was approved by the FDA and is bringing its testing within humans. Why does this mean it can’t work within seizure control and also be approved by the FDA. Seeing Elon Musk’s company, Neuralink, if successful, will reach a point where this device can be sold and be profitable. It could be normalized to the same degree as getting an implant in one’s arm as a contraceptive. If this technology is proved to be triumphant, the same technology could be adapted to work within my scope of epilepsy brain implant. Advancing technology is making new futures for people with epilepsy. We can imagine a future with so many less seizures and much happier people. I think it is very probable for the medical community to adapt a similar type of implant in the brain for seizure control and track seizure activity in the brain.

Reference

Mac, R.
