They make average annual salaries of $77,000 and $76,000, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.weforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/income-by-personality.jpg\" alt=\"income by personality\" class=\"wp-image-231477\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.truity.com\/sites\/default\/files\/PersonalityType-CareerAchievementStudy.pdf\">Truity Psychometrics<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The report suggests extroverts typically earn more because they\u2019re more likely to take on higher-paying managerial roles. On average, it says, extroverts supervise 4.5 people at work, while introverts supervise 2.8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Psychologists typically define extroverts as people who derive energy from social interactions, while introverts gain more energy from periods of quiet reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To Susan Cain, author of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Quiet-Power-Introverts-World-Talking\/dp\/0307352153\">Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can\u2019t Stop Talking<\/a>,\u201d these findings aren\u2019t especially surprising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cExtroverts are routinely chosen for leadership positions and introverts are looked over, even though introverts often deliver better outcomes,\u201d Cain tells Business Insider. \u201cThey\u2019re not perceived as leadership material.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her book, Cain explains that introverts are typically more skilled than extroverts in situations where they have to manage a group of initiative-takers. That\u2019s because introverts make time to listen to other people\u2019s suggestions. The problem is that most people assume extroverts will be more effective leaders simply because they\u2019re more talkative \u2014 and therefore don\u2019t always consider introverts for high-paying, top positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cain also suggests that introverts earn less because they tend to be less driven by financial rewards like a high salary. Instead, she says they\u2019re generally attracted to jobs that provide them with a deeper sense of meaning \u2014 like research positions and careers in the arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of these ideas imply that introverts can\u2019t take actions to advance their career or boost their earning power. If you\u2019re an introvert who wants to manage people but isn\u2019t getting tapped for those lucrative leadership roles, Cain suggests sitting down with your boss to discuss where you want to be in your career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYour boss may have no idea that that\u2019s what you want,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also important to draw attention to your contributions in ways that feel natural.&nbsp;Many introverts find the prospect of self-promoting \u201cdistasteful,\u201d Cain says. Instead, they can share articles or give presentations to colleagues to highlight what they\u2019ve been working on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some cases, however, introverts may find their careers have stagnated simply because they don\u2019t want to get promoted to management.&nbsp;If that\u2019s you, it may be time to reassess whether you\u2019re working at the right company and even in the right career. If you\u2019d like to stay at your current organization, is there a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/professional-success-and-management-2015-5\">different path to advancement<\/a>you can take?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, making the decision to eschew a promotion and salary bump or even switch fields is no easy feat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so much pressure to be the one who\u2019s in charge of everyone,\u201d Cain says. \u201cIt takes self-awareness and personal integrity to live life on the terms you want to live it on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the future, Cain suspects that the bias toward extroverts in the workplace (and the income disparity between extroverts and introverts) will gradually disappear as more people learn what introverts have to offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe hunger for and receptivity to these ideas is profound,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Relevance: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the article &#8220;Why Extroverts Earn More Than Introverts,&#8221; extroverts tend to earn more because they are often chosen for leadership roles due to their visibility and proactive behavior. For instance, an introvert could use it to feel more energized and confident at networking events or in group meetings, which are typically more suited for extroverts. Conversely, an extrovert might benefit from a more reflective mindset in creative or analytical tasks.
