{"id":18496,"date":"2024-09-08T20:34:23","date_gmt":"2024-09-09T00:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=18496"},"modified":"2024-09-16T22:33:19","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T02:33:19","slug":"art-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2024\/09\/08\/art-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Fitter, Happier, More Innovative\u2026 The Legacy of Radiohead\u2019s \u201cOK Computer\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Radiohead&#8217;s &#8220;Fitter Happier&#8221; offers an opportunity to reflect on unrealistic expectations of progress:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d73713e1e63347bb9ec43c5a5c767880\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim\" style=\"background-color:#e9e9e9\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>\u201cFitter Happier,\u201d<\/strong> the album\u2019s most anomalous track and most difficult listen, <strong>incorporates a computer text generated voice to paint a picture of an ideal society in the future. <\/strong>Dissonant and jarring piano chords have an unpleasant effect on the listener and accompany the computerized narrating voice, which <strong>lists in rapid succession unreasonable expectations for both personal and societal progress.<\/strong> Such expectations of the narrator include \u201cSleeping well, no bad dreams, no paranoia \/ No longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows \/ Nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The seemingly positive lyrics are instantly stripped of their deceptive facade as the song\u2019s ominous and discomforting sound takes a more looming presence. The clashing piano, strings, and electronic instruments all <strong>convey an atmosphere of despair and false hope<\/strong> through irregular time signatures and asymmetric sections. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The hidden overarching theme present in \u201cFitter Happier\u201d is a society driven by consumerism and advertisements.<\/span> Much of the song <strong>portrays an ideal lifestyle<\/strong>\u2014a society preoccupied with \u201ceating well,\u201d \u201cnot drinking too much,\u201d and \u201ca safer car\u201d\u2014<strong>while being oblivious to the fact that there is \u201cno chance of escape\u201d from the rituals and routines they have been accustomed to.<\/strong> (Hong, 2017, paras. 9, 10)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Fitter Happier\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/O4SzvsMFaek?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Radiohead. What happens when you try to live your life by those dictums? Indeed, who is asking you to? <strong>What self-help guru\u2019s religion should you follow to become a fitter, happier, more productive version of yourself?<\/strong> (Maheshwari, 2018, para. 5)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover is-light has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0aff544939f863aa28e4dcff8cf30b9f\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim\" style=\"background-color:#e9e9e9\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>The song is, first and foremost, a<strong> commentary on modern society&#8217;s obsession with conformity and keeping up appearances, and how draining such upkeep can be.<\/strong> However, &#8220;Fitter Happier&#8221; also speaks to dualities&#8212;for example, the dangers of <strong>suppressing human emotion and interaction<\/strong>, but how artificial such relationships can be. &#8220;<em>Regular exercise at the gym, three days a week \/ Getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries \/ At ease<\/em>,&#8221; the song says at one point. &#8220;<em>No longer afraid of the dark or midday shadows \/ Nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate \/ Nothing so childish \/ At a better pace, slower and more calculated.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As &#8220;Fitter Happier&#8221; progresses, cracks in the well-adjusted fa\u00e7ade start to appear (<em>&#8220;Now self-employed \/ Concerned, but powerless&#8221;<\/em>) before becoming full-blown yawning chasms by the song&#8217;s end (<em>&#8220;No longer empty and frantic \/ Like a cat \/ Tied to a stick \/ That&#8217;s driven into \/ Frozen winter s&#8212;&#8220;<\/em>). <strong>It&#8217;s emblematic of how madness can subtly creep in and infect the soul, as well as external relationships.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the song&#8217;s alienation still feels entirely relevant. If anything, it&#8217;s more relevant today, in an age where<strong> social media fosters both connection and detachment\u2014and dystopian vibes feel stronger every day.<\/strong> (Zaleski, 2017, paras. 1, 2, 9)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>I gathered a few articles that I thought best encapsulated the song\u2019s meaning, and I found it reflected what a financial planner would spit out as the expectations for personal progress. As people, we can see this rapid succession as unreasonable, but to a computer, it creates an ideal society. How many people truly want to live this way, and can an algorithm accurately accommodate those who don\u2019t? When applied to banking, will an algorithm be able to initiate self-growth or should it rely on the customer to set it in motion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One article mentions social media as a driving force behind connection and detachment; I think this could be broadened to emerging technology as a whole. This concept calls attention to a society driven by consumerism, slowly creeping into false hope. How can this be turned around? What is there to incentivize people, if not more stuff and promised progress?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In what ways can technology perform as a tool for positive change instead of adding to the disconnection? How would a system use artificial interactions to balance the need for authentic relationships?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">References<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hong, W.
