That\u2019s one of the definitions suggested by tech industry analyst Horace Dediu, founder of the Asymco podcast which majors on the \u201cautomobility reformation,\u201d or how driving is being disrupted. Dediu is considered the coiner of the word \u201cmicromobility,\u201d using it in the title of a 2017 conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At that first Micromobility Summit, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, thirty or so delegates started to wrestle with what exactly was meant by the word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Micromobility is roofless short-distance urban transport, and includes Lime-style electric scooters, Jump-style electric bikes and take-your-pick from any number of gyroscopic mono-wheels that now jostle \u2013 often illegally \u2013 with pedestrians on the sidewalk.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCycling is one part of [micromobility] but the thing about machines that help us move is going to be more focused on motorized machines,\u201d Dediu remarked in that first show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And despite others thinking \u201canalog\u201d bicycles must be micromobility machines, Dediu is sticking to his original definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCycling is one part of [micromobility] but the thing about machines that help us move is going to be more focused on motorized machines,\u201d Dediu remarked in that first show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And despite others thinking \u201canalog\u201d bicycles must be micromobility machines, Dediu is sticking to his original definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the report estimates that micromobility will \u201ccannibalize\u201d only about 8 to 15% of this theoretical market because scooters \u2013 even motorized ones \u2013 suffer from the problems also identified by Dediu, including \u201cweather conditions, age fit, and micromobility\u2019s lower presence in rural areas.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The author of this article claims that bicycling will no longer be a thing in the future. He introduces micromobility as being personal motorized transport under 500kg. The author is convinced that the future will move away from pedal-power, but we will move towards more lightweight personal transportation modes as a solution to the \u201clast mile\u201d but even more-so for \u201ctrips less than 8km, which would account for as much as 50-60% of today\u2019s total passenger miles traveled in China, the European Union, and the United States\u201d.
