{"id":18292,"date":"2024-09-05T12:00:15","date_gmt":"2024-09-05T16:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=18292"},"modified":"2024-09-19T03:01:50","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T07:01:50","slug":"gamification-in-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2024\/09\/05\/gamification-in-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Gamification in Business"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Gamification is already being implemented in businesses, what can we learn from that? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-30b5b3770f342e11b5986e818670a383\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\"><strong>What makes gamifying the workplace so popular?<\/strong> The fact that it\u2019s so effective. Just take a look at these gamification statistics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>90% of employees say gamification makes them more productive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employees report a 60% increase in engagement with a gamified work experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Organizations that implement gamification strategies are seven times more profitable than those that don\u2019t use them.<br><br><strong>What Are Gamification Strategies for Business?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-decffff8b567195d2c619b73502e1a4e\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\">Clearly, there are a lot of benefits to gamification. However, there are also pitfalls, and some organizations go too far with these strategies, leading to negative results that impact business objectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-041579e600408224656c530bdea36ef7\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\">Let\u2019s take a look at what works with using gamification in the workplace vs. what doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-df68ffdf0a3a1559ee3d4e9c1d56db24\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\"><strong>1. Take the long view.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e6a4d158c043092371ed1cab0995e159\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\">Regardless of who or what you\u2019re trying to gamify, you must take the long view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7b96c9ba32e68ab1d97244f5ed48fab9\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\">It\u2019s very easy to get people excited such an initiative at first, but over time, that enthusiasm can wane, especially if your gamification attempts are needlessly complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-aeaa602a8c82233977c66793ec117dac\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\">One of the chief things to avoid when it comes to gamification in the workplace is going too deep too early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6b7b7ee9850b6c47fe228bb5a161f4d2\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\"><strong>2. Don\u2019t overemphasize rewards.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-45b58ba76aeb82dd17f16837b650d8b5\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\">Thinking that people will participate in your program only if the rewards are big and flashy is a fallacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-684a93b0027f1caa6698e3d41dcd37c8\" style=\"font-size:15px;text-transform:lowercase\">The best corporate gamification programs are about the competition itself. The problem with relying on big rewards to motivate employees are twofold:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can\u2019t keep funding big rewards over the long-term. (Remember what we just talked about above?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It can create false incentives. In other words, people end up cutting corners just for the win.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9ef1b4050321a895cf9da5880c3e64ea\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\"><strong>3. Create a level playing field.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-04d27838d7dde0f2f4db0c75bd517c5d\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">When we help our clients gamify their employee influencer programs, we advocate that they share the scoring framework with all of their users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-b3d5bbdde3a866ab177de3d0f5f32617\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">This helps everyone understand how the game works, what the goal is, and how to succeed at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6133e8614e77c910e9804d889978cb08\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">Of course, gamification in the corporate environment should always be about some larger goal (e.g., driving new leads, increasing brand reach, etc.), and having the rules of the game out in the open helps everyone participate, regardless of who ends up winning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5915b01126db7a7be1137f78b0cace47\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\"><strong>4. Don\u2019t celebrate just the top performer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6bd23a6ded9c6ada688c153ed4b55cdb\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">We\u2019re all winners! No, but seriously, performance should be measured at least in part based on participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ff32a6339cc3764ad5ebb7f9f049812f\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">If 90% of your participants are fully engaged in your program, that\u2019s a huge win, regardless if the top 10% drive the majority of the results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ca6d4ecea1e07bed51de8d1dee11c13a\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">So celebrate all your participants. After all, gamification in business is about the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-539ee6438658a572a3478d4e43f76e30\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\"><strong>5. Come up with creative rewards.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c6d198dc04b11258aa0907e3d46ea5f4\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">Back on the topic of rewards, it\u2019s important to keep in mind that some prizes are more effective than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0e5be6fcfde2de1ff29ce2ceed07a74e\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">Instructure, for example, has clearly had enormous success with gift certificates and iPads. However, material rewards won\u2019t work for every team or every company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-dcd3b2273f40f09055111008cb25c386\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">We\u2019ve found that some of the best gamification rewards are those that are connected to professional recognition and advancement. These include such prizes as lunch with the CEO, a LinkedIn recommendation from a VP, a shout-out at an all-hands meeting, an invitation to guest blog on the company blog, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-abc5b370940fc0f00519e942516a28d5\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\"><strong>6. Track and report.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7b6ab8303b1722cc9495ba6d5bc5562c\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">You know that saying, \u201cIf it doesn\u2019t get tracked, it doesn\u2019t exist?\u201d That certainly goes for gamification programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f1a44dabc392f71887ad71aaa6dd14c5\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">Tracking is important for several reasons, but most importantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-05078025250f82df26567539c4bc8f44\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">It helps participants know where they stand and how to improve their performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-35fb20e787a0d7e0f60eb64bd49386ac\" style=\"font-size:14px;text-transform:lowercase\">It helps the program leader understand if the program actually drives results.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Gamification-Strategy-Tips-Workplace-1024x536.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Gamification-Strategy-Tips-Workplace-1024x536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Gamification-Strategy-Tips-Workplace-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Gamification-Strategy-Tips-Workplace-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Gamification-Strategy-Tips-Workplace-696x364.jpg 696w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Gamification-Strategy-Tips-Workplace-1068x559.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Gamification-Strategy-Tips-Workplace-803x420.jpg 803w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Gamification-Strategy-Tips-Workplace.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In this article, we can see that gamification tactics are already being used in the workplace. Not only that but these methods are very successful and are producing great results for businesses. I would not be surprised if we start seeing gamification methods in business more and more frequently.&nbsp; However, what can we learn from this article regarding gamification? To me, it seems clear that people are heavily motivated by things like competition, roadmaps, or a points and rewards system. In this article I see a clear link from gamification to productivity but is there\/could there be a link from gamification to education and literacy in a certain topic?&nbsp; I suspect there is. Is there an overlap in business gamification tactics with education gamification?
