{"id":1826,"date":"2019-09-19T09:01:46","date_gmt":"2019-09-19T09:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=1826"},"modified":"2019-09-19T09:01:47","modified_gmt":"2019-09-19T09:01:47","slug":"roundaround-dynamic-bridge-is-made-of-autonomous-boats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2019\/09\/19\/roundaround-dynamic-bridge-is-made-of-autonomous-boats\/","title":{"rendered":"RoundAround Dynamic \u201cBridge\u201d Is Made Of Autonomous Boats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p> By Rima Sabina Aouf, <em>Dezeen<\/em>, Aug 14, 2019 <br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/08\/14\/roundaround-carlo-ratti-mit-senseable-city-lab-amsterdam-netherlands\/\">https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/08\/14\/roundaround-carlo-ratti-mit-senseable-city-lab-amsterdam-netherlands\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nCarlo Ratti and his team at MIT&#8217;s Senseable City Lab have come up with a &#8220;bridge&#8221; made of continuously circling autonomous boats for a tricky patch of Amsterdam&#8217;s waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The robot boats, appropriately known as Roboats, use cameras, lidar&nbsp; \u2013 a detection system that uses laser \u2013and algorithms to operate without human drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They communicate with each other to calculate the best path around obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Roboats are electric, and use their brief sojourns at the platforms on either side of the canal to recharge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each boat has room for up to six people and will also contain a larger touch-screen so the passengers can monitor the status of their journey or call for assistance if required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Senseable City Lab and AMS Institute say the roundAround will transport hundreds of people per hour. They see it as a form of temporary &#8220;dynamic infrastructure&#8221; to suit a developing city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Roboat units of roundAround will autonomously respond to and learn from the dynamics of this Amsterdam waterway,&#8221; said Ratti. &#8220;As they operate, the system will become increasingly more intelligent and well-equipped to be implemented in other parts of the city and other cities worldwide.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This technology features a learning autonomous robotic boat network which creates a dynamic \u201cbridge\u201d to provide crossing of Amsterdam\u2019s waterways. This solution cuts out a 10 minute walk from a path that could not be solved with a conventional bridge as the waterway is a fixed mast ship route.
