{"id":1402,"date":"2019-09-14T22:32:01","date_gmt":"2019-09-14T22:32:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/?p=1402"},"modified":"2019-09-17T04:58:13","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T04:58:13","slug":"underwear-ads-lose-the-macho-how-marketing-has-embraced-real-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/index.php\/2019\/09\/14\/underwear-ads-lose-the-macho-how-marketing-has-embraced-real-men\/","title":{"rendered":"Underwear Ads Lose the Macho: How Marketing Has Embraced Real Men"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>by: Tiffany Hsu <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nA number of ads for briefs, boxers and other products aimed at men have lately turned away from old notions of square-jawed masculinity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a Hanes commercial that made its debut last month, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ONhS1dry0lg\">Every Bod<\/a>,\u201d a wide range of men perform an elaborate musical number in their skivvies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent Jockey commercial focused on a man getting emotional as he described his battle with alcohol and drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emphasis on men with ordinary bodies and others who don\u2019t fit tired stereotypes seems like progress for an industry that, a decade ago, featured<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE\"> a shirtless hunk scented with Old Spice.<\/a> These days, more and more advertisers are telling men they don\u2019t need to be the buffest or most interesting man in the world, just themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The challenging of stereotypical notions of gender has been a feature of marketing campaigns aimed at women at least as far back as Nike\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/09\/26\/magazine\/26fob-wwln-t.html?module=inline\"> \u201cIf you let me play\u201d<\/a> campaign in 1995. Dove\u2019s<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/04\/19\/business\/media\/dove-ad-on-womens-self-image-creates-an-online-sensation.html?module=inline\"> \u201cReal Beauty\u201d<\/a> ads, of more recent vintage, also functioned as a critique of ads that placed women in categories like \u201cbimbo\u201d or \u201chousewife.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Axe\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=3drMG0xbKj8\">bathsculinity<\/a>\u201d commercials, created by the 72andSunny agency, feature a man soaking in a bubble bath while musing that \u201ctingle\u201d is \u201cnot the manliest word, not like \u2018machete\u2019 or \u2018hand grenade.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such ads are variations on a news-making, #MeToo-influenced commercial from Gillette<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/15\/business\/gillette-ad-men.html?module=inline\"> earlier this year<\/a> that was critical of toxic male behaviors like brawling, bullying, catcalling and mansplaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some observers said that the new style in ads for men\u2019s products might not really be intended for a male audience. \u201cI bet it\u2019s women,\u201d said Lisa Wade, a sociologist specializing in gender at Occidental College, who noted that women do much of the spending on such products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what women are craving right now,\u201d Ms. Wade continued, \u201cbecause of their uniquely exploited and objectified status in American society. It\u2019s about money, the bottom line \u2014 the people behind these ads are feeding into some kind of cultural desire.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This article is interesting as it explores males&#8217; relationships with advertising and how advertising has changed to be more inclusive of what it means to be a man. Frequently when the topic is discussed, the conversation has a focus on women and what it means to be a woman.
