Molt. Rest. Molt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>again. Self-reinvention is&nbsp;everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spin many nests. Cultivate stinging<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>bristles. Don\u2019t get sentimental<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>about your discarded skins. Grow<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>quickly. Develop a yen for nettles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternate crumpling and climbing. Rely<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>on your antennae. Sequester poisons<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in your body for use at a later date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When threatened, emit foul odors<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>in self-defense. Behave cryptically&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>to confuse predators: change colors, spit,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>or feign death. If all else fails, taste terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As I&#8217;ve been spending time with the older adults at Champion Intergenerational, I&#8217;ve been asking what advice they would want to give to the preschoolers. Responses have ranged from &#8220;be yourself&#8221; to &#8220;do what your mother tells you and don&#8217;t disobey.&#8221; This poem reminds me that everyone has diverse experiences that have informed their outlook on the world.<\/em> <em>This is important to keep in mind as I see the adults interact with the preschoolers.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Amy Gerstler, written poetry,&nbsp;December 3, 2014 https:\/\/www.sandiegoreader.com\/news\/2014\/dec\/03\/poetry-advice-caterpillar\/# Chew your way into a new world.
