By knowing how questions work and how to use them cleverly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.toptal.com\/designers\/ui\">designers<\/a>\u00a0can unleash the potential of good questions to build understanding, trigger the imagination, and foster collaboration. Designers have the responsibility to help teams establish direction and not waste valuable resources working\u2014no matter how fast\u2014on the wrong problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some designers are\u00a0<strong>afraid of annoying people<\/strong>.\u00a0Designers should make it clear that they are not there to annoy people or slow down the process unnecessarily but to help the team build better products; consequently, their feedback should be seen as a valuable contribution and a crucial part of a prudent design process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d2-1024x522.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d2-1024x522.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d2-300x153.jpg 300w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d2-768x391.jpg 768w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d2-1536x782.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d2-696x355.jpg 696w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d2-1068x544.jpg 1068w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d2-825x420.jpg 825w, https:\/\/desis.osu.edu\/seniorthesis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d2.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A good question is the one that lets you obtain the\u00a0<strong>type<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>quality<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>quantity<\/strong>\u00a0of information you need. Here are some basic but very effective types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Open-ended questions<\/strong>\u00a0encourage people to reflect and reveal what\u2019s important for them. They allow people to freely expand on what is comfortable for them, rather than justifying their thoughts. Below are some types of open-ended questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Explorative<\/strong>\u00a0questions force expansion on new points of view and uncovered areas.\u00a0<em>Have you thought of\u2026?<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Affective<\/strong>\u00a0questions reveal people\u2019s feelings about something.\u00a0<em>How do you feel about\u2026?<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Reflective<\/strong>\u00a0questions encourage more elaboration.\u00a0<em>What do you think causes\u2026?<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Probing<\/strong>\u00a0questions invite a deeper examination.\u00a0<em>Can you describe how\u2026?<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Analytical<\/strong>\u00a0questions look for the roots of a problem.\u00a0<em>What are the causes of\u2026?<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Clarifying<\/strong>\u00a0questions help align and avoid misunderstandings.\u00a0<em>So, you mean that..?<\/em><\/li><li><strong>Closed questions<\/strong>\u00a0call for specific answers\u2014usually yes or no\u2014or they force the respondent to select an answer from a given set, or to agree or disagree with a statement. Closed questions tend to focus on facts\u2014what, when, where\u2014and are usually easy to answer.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>form<\/strong>\u00a0of a question is part of its function. Good questions should be framed under these principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Good questions should empower.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Good questions should challenge assumptions.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Good questions should cause the person to stretch.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Good questions should encourage breakthrough thinking.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you choose the right type of question and you frame it correctly, you need to set the stage in order for others to understand why you are asking questions and what for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Adopt a learner mindset. <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Find the right people to ask. <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Set the stage. <\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Ask your questions.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Dig deeper.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Good questions challenge the status quo, forcing people to pay attention to what\u2019s really going on. Users, stakeholders, suppliers, clients, team\u2026<\/li><li><strong>What<\/strong>\u00a0elements compose the situation? Actions, behaviors, elements, tools\u2026<\/li><li><strong>Where<\/strong>\u00a0does it happen? Geographically, culturally, socially, economically\u2026<\/li><li><strong>When<\/strong>\u00a0does this occur? Past, present, future, situational context (when I\u2019m in a rush), frequency\u2026<\/li><li><strong>Why<\/strong>\u00a0does this happen? Causes, constraints, needs, motivations\u2026<\/li><li><strong>How<\/strong>\u00a0is the situation created? Communication with your team and client must be efficient to help preserve time for all parties involved. The art of formulating a question lies in a few key elements; getting the type, quality, and quantity of information one needs. As designers, we must take up space without overstepping boundaries or seeming cold or abrasive. The pursuit of knowledge may prove difficult, but it is our job to dig deep in order to help solve these sensitive issues, and therefore, we should not be afraid of communicating with other involved parties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can we formulate questions to get the most out of our co-design methods of research? How can we consider the structure of a question in regards to our surveys?
