INTERACTIVE WALL

CODESIGN WORKSHOP

The second-floor wall in the southwest stairwell of the south union garage will be interactive. created using coded buttons that power a projection. Four color coded buttons will bring up different interactive digital tabs when they are activated by a user of the stairwell. Users can choose to experience positive news, nature, words of affirmation, or a game tab. The tabs will be open for a set amount of time and fade back into the cover photo that prompts users to participate until another button is chosen. This wall is meant to provide an outlet of engagement and self-expression alleviating the monotony of an everyday task.

INTERVENTION PROPOSAL
INTERACTIVE WALL

Connecting communities through engagement and visual surprise and delight

While parking garages are seen as unimportant, isolated, and neglected, “The Blank Wall” evolves this experience by continuing the culture of care Ohio State values. “The Blank Wall” system epitomizes surprise interactions, something that is lacking in the overlooked space. Focused on creating a new and enjoyable user experience, “The Blank Wall” operates through large push button and an interactive screen.

To alleviate the uniformity of an everyday interaction, a giant and inviting button connected to a large screen placed on the wall in the garage stairwell. As someone is entering or leaving the garage, they are inclined to press the button to see what happens. When the button is pressed, it activates one of the following randomly: OSU football highlights, happy news stories, funny animal videos, today in history facts, or abstract art. If the user is the 100th person to press the button, they experience an exciting celebration. Each user is met with a different surprising and delightful experience, which allows for spontaneity in a mundane space.

“The Blank Wall” is intentionally designed to promote engagement and surprise into someone’s everyday routine. The system operates so that it can be continuously used by the same individual and still provide a new experience. If someone parks in the parking garage every day, they will be able to expect that when they hit the button, they will see something different than they saw the day before. The act of pressing a button encourages interaction between different people in the garage and between people and technology. The surprise of what will result from the button being pressed helps to create astonishment and variety within an ordinary environment. The value of the 100th person celebration is the mentality that a person is leaving their mark. When someone pushes the button they count, they matter. The 100th person surprise is a celebration of the community that “The Blank Wall” has built.

The Interactive Wall consists of two main objects: a giant screen and a giant button. By pressing the giant button, it triggers a series of randomized videos to begin playing on the screen in front of the user. In order to create this experience, we are utilizing the capabilities of a Raspberry Pi 4 model. Inside of the button, one will find a spring, micro-button, breadboard, resistors, and the Raspberry Pi 4 along with a power source that allow the button to work with the screen to create an interactive experience for users.
